Les Darley of the HMS Crane Association has cleared up the question, 'Why did HMS St Brides Bay change from K600 to F600' ......

The answer to your question about the pendant number change is given in a book that I have "Royal Navy Frigates 1945-1983" by Leo Marriot.

"At the end of WW2 all Royal Navy escort vessels were carrying pendant numbers with flags K (frigates and corvettes), L (Hunt class escort destroyers) and U (sloops) superior. In 1947/48 all these groups of vessels were reclassified as frigates and given a pendant number with flag F superior. In most cases this merely involved a change of prefix letter whilst the ship retained its original number. Where such a straightforward change would have resulted in two ships carrying the same number, a multiple of 100 was added to prevent the double allocation. Thus TEAZER (K23) became F23 and CRANE (U23) became F123."

However, the following is received from ex chief stoker who served aboard Teaser ....

Congratulations on an excellent website. It evokes many memories. Could I just point out erratum on your Pendant Number Change page?

HMS Teazer's pendant number changed from R23 to F123 around the time you mention.

I was on board Teazer in 1958 as a junior stoker when she was Captain F2. I continued service through ten more ships before being pensioned-off as a silly old Chief Stoker in 1982.

Keep up the good work. Regards,
Sandy Barclay.
