I was intrigued as to 'why' the ship went to the trouble and expense of changing its crest around 1954-1956 and asked for information.

It would appear - and I've been informed by several sources - that the original crest attracted comments of a 'sexual' and 'anatomical' nature by the crew(s), and in order 'not to offend' the change was made.

Surely, sailors' couldn't be so crude?
